Im Rahmen der Ausstellung Seeds. Reclaiming Roots, Sowing Futures zeigt das Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus in Kooperation mit der Klima Biennale Wien und dem KunstHausWien den dokumentarischen Essayfilm Wild Relatives (2018) von Jumana Manna, Künstlerin der Ausstellung.
Der Film begleitet den Transfer von Saatgut zwischen dem Svalbard Global Seed Vault im norwegischen Spitzbergen und der Bekaa-Ebene im Libanon. Er erzählt davon, wie Saatgutkopien der syrischen Agrarforschungseinrichtung ICARDA, die aufgrund des Bürgerkriegs in den Libanon evakuiert werden musste, aus dem arktischen Saatguttresor entnommen, auf Felder im Libanon angepflanzt und von dort wieder nach Norwegen zurückgeführt werden – unter den Bedingungen von Krieg, Klimawandel und globalen Machtverhältnissen. Wild Relatives macht die vielschichtigen Verflechtungen ökologischer, politischer und sozialer Prozesse sichtbar und eröffnet eine poetische Reflexion über Biodiversität, Verlust und Widerständigkeit.
Jumana Manna ist eine palästinensisch-amerikanische Künstlerin und Filmemacherin. In ihren Arbeiten setzt sie sich kritisch mit extraktivistischen und neokolonialen Praktiken auseinander und untersucht Spannungsfelder zwischen Moderne und Tradition in den Bereichen Architektur, Landwirtschaft und Recht. Sie lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und Jerusalem.
Alena Williams ist Professorin für Theorie und Vermittlung von Gegenwartskunst am Institut für Kunst- und Kulturwissenschaften der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien. Sie unterrichtet zeitgenössische Kunstgeschichte und -theorie, Film- und Medienwissenschaften sowie Medienökologien.

Wild Relatives von Jumana Manna
As part of the exhibition Seeds. Reclaiming Roots, Sowing Futures, Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus, in cooperation with Klima Biennale Wien and KunstHausWien, is showing the documentary essay film Wild Relatives (2018) by Jumana Manna, an artist featured in the exhibition.
The film follows the journey of seeds between the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Spitsbergen, Norway, and the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. It tells how seeds from the Syrian gene bank ICARDA were first stored in the Arctic seed vault after the escalation of the war and later returned to fields in Lebanon for propagation, where they are recultivated under the conditions of war, climate change, and global power relations. In this way, Wild Relatives makes visible the complex interconnections between ecological, political, and social processes and opens up a poetic reflection on biodiversity, loss, and resilience.
Jumana Manna is a Palestinian-American artist and filmmaker. In her work, she critically examines extractivist and neocolonial practices and explores tensions between modernity and tradition in the fields of architecture, agriculture, and law. She lives and works in Berlin and Jerusalem.
Alena Williams is a professor of theory and mediation of contemporary art in the Institute for Art Theory and Cultural Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. She teaches courses in contemporary art history and theory; film and media studies; and the environmental humanities.
